Trading styles compared
| Style | Holding time | Charts | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scalping | Seconds–minutes | 1–5 min | Full-time traders with very low costs |
| Day trading | Minutes–hours, closed by end of day | 5–60 min | Traders who can watch the London/NY sessions |
| Swing trading | Days–weeks | 4h, daily | People with jobs; fewer, larger moves |
| Position trading | Weeks–months | Daily, weekly | Fundamental, macro views |
1. Trend following
Trade in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend. A simple version: on the daily chart, only buy when price is above the 50-day moving average, and enter on a pullback to support or the moving average, with a stop below the recent swing low.
2. Breakout trading
Enter when price breaks out of a range, a triangle or flag, often at the London open (09:00/10:00 SAST). Many breakouts fail, so wait for a close beyond the level and keep stops tight.
3. Range trading
When price is bouncing between support and resistance (common in the Asian session), buy near support and sell near resistance with stops outside the range.
4. Scalping
Scalpers aim for 3–10 pips per trade. Spreads and commission are a big share of each trade, so scalping only works on the most liquid pairs with a low-cost account, during the busiest hours.
5. Swing trading
Swing traders look for multi-day moves on 4-hour and daily charts, using price action, support and resistance, and the economic calendar. It suits South Africans with day jobs because decisions can be made in the evening.
6. News trading (NFP, CPI, FOMC)
Trading the reaction to big releases. It is high-risk: spreads widen and price can spike both ways. See NFP, CPI and FOMC.
7. Gold (XAUUSD) strategies
Gold trends strongly but swings $20–$50 in a day, so stops must be wider and lot sizes smaller. Watch the dollar, US yields and US data. See trading XAUUSD.
The part that matters most: risk management
- Risk 0.5%–1% per trade (use the lot size calculator).
- Always use a stop-loss.
- Aim for a reward-to-risk of at least 1.5:1.
- Set a daily loss limit, e.g. stop trading after losing 3% in a day.
- Keep leverage low; avoid adding to losing trades.
How to test a strategy
- Write the rules so someone else could follow them.
- Back-test on historical charts (TradingView replay or MT5 strategy tester).
- Forward-test on a demo account for 50–100 trades.
- Go live small and compare results with the test.
