What is a demo account?
A demo trading account is a practice account funded with virtual money (often $10,000 or R100,000). Prices come from the live market, and the platform works exactly like a real account, so you can learn order types, stop-losses, lot sizes and margin without risk.
How to open a forex demo account
- Choose a platform: most FSCA-regulated brokers offer free MT4, MT5 or their own app demo. TradingView has free paper trading built into its charts.
- Register with your name and email (a demo usually needs no ID documents).
- Pick the account type, currency (choose ZAR if you will trade in rand), leverage and virtual balance. Set the balance to what you would realistically deposit.
- Download the app or web platform and log in with the demo server and password.
Demo platforms compared
| Platform | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 (MT4) | Forex, Expert Advisors | Classic platform; huge library of indicators and EAs |
| MetaTrader 5 (MT5) | Forex plus shares and indices | More timeframes and order types; the industry is moving here |
| TradingView paper trading | Chart-based practice | Free, runs in the browser |
| Broker apps | Mobile trading | Simple interface; features vary |
How to practise properly
- Use a realistic balance. Trading R1 million virtual when you will deposit R5,000 teaches bad habits.
- Follow a written strategy and risk 1% per trade.
- Keep a journal of every demo trade.
- Demo for at least 50–100 trades before going live.
Demo vs live trading
Demo fills can be better than live (no slippage, sometimes tighter spreads), and the psychology is different: losing real money feels very different. When you go live, start with the smallest size your broker allows.
Forex demo contests
Some brokers run demo trading competitions with cash prizes. They can be fun, but they reward high-risk gambling, which is the opposite of what makes a good trader. Read the terms and never pay to enter.
