What is bitcoin?
Bitcoin is a decentralised digital currency launched in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. Transactions are recorded on a public blockchain secured by "mining", and the protocol caps supply at 21 million coins. Roughly every four years the "halving" cuts the number of new coins issued to miners by half; the most recent halving was in April 2024.
