How the JSE works
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange is Africa's largest stock exchange. Continuous trading runs from 09:00 to 16:50 SAST on weekdays, followed by a closing auction that sets the official closing price shortly after 17:00. The exchange is closed on South African public holidays. Prices are quoted in cents: a share showing 15,420 costs R154.20.
The All Share Index (J203) covers about 99% of the market's value; the Top 40 (J200) tracks the 40 largest companies. Because rand-hedge giants such as Naspers, Prosus, Richemont, Anglo American and Glencore earn mostly abroad, the JSE often rises when the rand weakens.
