What is the Dow Jones?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), created in 1896, tracks 30 large US "blue-chip" companies such as Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, UnitedHealth, Caterpillar, Apple and NVIDIA. Unlike the S&P 500 it is price-weighted, so a stock with a high share price moves the Dow more than a bigger company with a lower share price.
Dow Jones vs US30
Forex and CFD brokers list the Dow as US30 (or WallStreet30). It tracks the index's price but is a derivative: you can trade it nearly 24 hours with leverage. A one-point move on a 1-lot US30 position is often worth $1, but contract sizes vary, so check your broker. See indices in forex.
What moves the Dow Jones?
- The Federal Reserve: rate cuts tend to support stocks, hikes weigh on them (see FOMC).
- Inflation and jobs data: CPI and NFP change rate expectations.
- Company earnings, especially the largest tech companies.
- Bond yields and the dollar.
