How the oil price affects South Africa

South Africa imports most of its crude and refined fuel, so a higher oil price means a bigger import bill, higher transport costs and higher inflation. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy adjusts petrol, diesel and paraffin prices on the first Wednesday of each month, based on the average Brent price in rand and international product prices over the previous month. That means both Brent and USD/ZAR matter: a weaker rand can push fuel up even if oil is flat. The 2026 fuel shock is the main reason the SARB hiked the repo rate to 7.25% in September.

On the JSE, Sasol benefits from higher oil prices because its synthetic fuels and chemicals are priced off global benchmarks.

What moves crude oil

  • OPEC+ production decisions (quotas and voluntary cuts).
  • US inventory data: the EIA weekly report, usually Wednesday 16:30 SAST (17:30 in the US winter).
  • Geopolitics: conflict in the Middle East, shipping routes, sanctions on Russia or Iran.
  • Global growth, especially Chinese demand, and the US dollar.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Brent crude oil price today?

The live price per barrel is in the chart at the top of the page (select "Brent crude").

Why is Brent more expensive than WTI?

Brent is a seaborne crude priced for global delivery, while WTI is landlocked in the US, where supply is abundant, so WTI usually trades at a discount.

How does oil affect petrol prices in South Africa?

Monthly fuel adjustments are based on international product prices and the rand/dollar exchange rate, so rising Brent or a weaker rand both push petrol and diesel up.
